Canvas: A New Way to Work with ChatGPT

OpenAI is launching Canvas, a new interface for collaborating with ChatGPT on writing and coding projects that go beyond simple conversation. Canvas opens in a different window, allowing you and ChatGPT to work together on a project. This early beta presents a new method of working together—not just through communication but also by developing and refining ideas side by side.

Canvas was created using GPT-4o and can be manually selected in the model selector while in beta. Canvas is now available to all ChatGPT Plus and Team members worldwide, beginning today. Enterprise and educational users will have access next week. We also intend to make Canvas available to all ChatGPT Free users once it is out of beta.

Canvas provides you with control over the project. You can directly edit text or code. ChatGPT has a menu of shortcuts that allow you to alter writing length, debug your code, and conduct other essential tasks rapidly. You may also recover prior versions of your work by pressing the back button in canvas.

Canvas launches automatically when ChatGPT finds a situation where it may be useful. You can also include "use canvas" as a prompt to open canvas and work on an existing project.

Writing shortcuts include:

• ChatGPT provides inline recommendations and feedback
• Adjust the length. Edits the document's length to make it shorter or longer.
• Change reading level: Moves the reading level from Kindergarten to Graduate School.
• Final polish: Checks grammar, clarity, and consistency.
• Emojis: Emojis can be used to emphasise and colour text.

Coding is an iterative process, and it can be difficult to track all of the changes to your code in chat. Canvas makes it easier to track and comprehend ChatGPT changes, and we intend to continue improving transparency in these types of updates.

Coding shortcuts include:

• Review code: ChatGPT makes inline suggestions to help you improve your code.
• Include logs: Adds print statements to help you debug and understand your code.
• Add comments: Adds comments to the code to help it be understood.
• Bug fix: To correct issues, problematic code is detected and rewritten.
• Port into a language: Translates your code to JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++, or PHP.
